Purchasing a Computer

When to Buy

Mechanical Engineering courses are introduced in the second year of study. It’s recommended that you wait until then to purchase your computer, so that you have the most up-to-date and powerful system possible. (There are general access computer labs across campus that you can use to complete other coursework).

Upgrade Regularly

To keep current with the latest software, plan to upgrade your computer every three or four years.

2016 Pre-Approved Mobile Configuration from the UA Computer Store

We are working with the campus computer store to develop a standard laptop configuration to ease the purchasing process. This configuration should serve you for years to come.

Note: Running Windows via Boot-Camp on Mac computers is possible, this configuration is not supported by the Mechanical Engineering Department. Running Windows in a VM is also highly discouraged at this time for performance reasons. All Mac support will be handled by third party providers – The UA Computer Store is the Apple Authorized Service Provider for the Fayetteville campus.

Below are 2 recommended configurations the first meets a minimum system configuration to run Mechanical Engineering applications.

• Software: Operating Systems •

Mechanical Engineering IT Staff recommends Windows 7 or 10 Professional 64-bit as the default operating system on your computer. If your computer has 32-bit editions of Windows, you are advised to upgrade. Software used in Mechanical Engineering will perform most optimally in a 64-bit Windows environment and some software is only available in Windows versions.

Apple hardware users will need to purchase a Windows 7 or 10 license and install via Boot Camp (See Here). Use of Windows in a virtual environment (VMWare, Parallels) is HIGHLY discouraged as programs will need direct access to hardware resources not available in an emulation layer. Windows 64-Bit licenses may be purchased online via the Microsoft Store for educational pricing.
